Fermoie’s patterns have become favorites among interior designers for their distinctive drawing, varied scales, and remarkable range of color. Some are familiar signatures; others offer a quieter expression of pattern. This guide brings together the designs offered in our Fermoie lampshade collection, with a closer look at each pattern and the colorways we carry.
The Patterns
From the small repeats of Rabanna and Popple to the generous floral of Marlborough, these nine designs each have a distinct character. Explore the patterns below and the colorways available in our collection.
Pattern by Pattern
Each lampshade below is shown in Green, the one colorway Fermoie prints across every pattern, so the designs can be compared at the same scale; Moiré, which comes in Cream rather than Green, is the exception. The colorways we stock follow each description.
Marlborough
Marlborough is a contemporary interpretation of the classic English rose, drawn from a fragment of traditional floral wallpaper and named for the town where every yard is printed. A hand-drawn rose sits inside an arrangement of leaves and curves that balances ornament with open ground. It is the largest-scale pattern Fermoie prints on light linen, and the one that needs a lampshade big enough to show the whole flower.
Colorways in our collection: Green, Light Blue, Nut Brown, Orange, Red, Teal, and Yellow. Nut Brown Marlborough is exclusive to The Shade Shop.

Rabanna
Rabanna comes from the early tradition of printed cottons, in which small geometric repeats were built by block printing. Fermoie redrew the chevron with a deliberate irregularity, so the line and tone shift a little from repeat to repeat and the surface gains rhythm and depth. It prints on Fermoie cotton rather than linen, which gives it the crispest definition of the nine once the lamp is lit.
Colorways in our collection: Blue, Green, Grey, Light Blue, Light Pink, Nut Brown, Red, and Yellow; Light Blue, Nut Brown, and Red also come in oval.

Marden
Marden starts with a triangle and lets the studio loosen it. Hand-drawn triangles overlap into a gently irregular field that resolves, from a distance, into small star-like shapes. It is the most graphic of the nine, printed on cotton, and the points hold their edges well when the lamp is lit.
Colorways in our collection: Blue, Green, Nut Brown, and Red, with Red also in oval. Nut Brown Marden is a Fermoie colorway available only through The Shade Shop.

Popple
Popple is Fermoie’s study of water: small ripples, shifting light, and the rhythm of a surface that never quite settles. The studio developed it from mosaics, mark-making, and the effect of weather on water, building gentle curves in layered color. On a lampshade it reads as texture from across the room and as a pattern in its own right when you stand beside the lamp.
Colorways in our collection: Blue, Green, Light Blue, Nut Brown, Orange, Pink, and Red; Nut Brown Popple is one of our best sellers across the whole shop.

Whittle
Whittle takes its name and its character from the carved surface of wood, where small shifts in line and plane make texture and depth. Loose vertical marks combine with softened geometric shapes, so the design feels worked by hand rather than ruled. Printed on light linen, its linear structure and even scale make it an easy pattern to place beside stripes and florals.
Colorways in our collection: Blue & Neutral Brown, Fuchsia, Green, Green & Blue, and Neutral Brown.

Figured
Figured is a quiet, tonal surface with the pattern held inside the cloth rather than printed on top of it. Areas of color shift gently across the weave, so the design emerges through light and movement instead of repetition. On a lampshade it gives depth without announcing itself, which suits rooms where a subtle pattern is wanted.
Colorways in our collection: Blue, Ecru, Green, and Pink.

Wicker
Wicker takes its structure from traditional wickerwork, where interlaced strands make a pattern out of light, shadow, and the gaps between them. Fermoie’s lines cross and layer like warp and weft, and a subtle variation in color sits inside the structure. Printed on light linen, it holds its pattern clearly when lit and leaves small windows of open ground for the light to pass.
Colorways in our collection: Blue, Fuchsia, Green, Grey, Light Blue, Nut Brown, Red, and Yellow, with Green, Light Blue, and Pink in oval.

Moiré
Moiré takes its character from the watered look of traditional silk, and Fermoie prints it, like the plains, in layers of textured color taken from natural dyes. The softly shifting surface is the closest thing in the collection to a solid, with a little more life in it. Fermoie makes the lampshade in Cream, which is why it is shown here in that colorway rather than green.
Colorways in our collection: Blue, Cream, and Pink, with Cream also in oval.

Strié
Strié borrows a traditional painting technique in which a dry comb or brush is drawn through wet paint, leaving fine linear marks. The layered lines move gently across the cloth, so the lampshade reads almost as a plain from across the room and reveals its striations up close. Fermoie prints it on light linen, and it is the pattern for anyone who wants color and movement without a motif.
Colorways in our collection: Green, Grey, Pink, and Red.
